--and there Luke rushes forward, going in for the grab, only for the Abra to make its escape and leave him faceplanting against the ground.]

This stupid thing's been running from me all morning! Why won't it stay in one place like a normal pokemon?! Zack, what do I do?!

Sure it is. Just catch a Pokémon that doesn't run away and then use it to handle the other. [And hope that the Pokémon either flinches it or status-effects it, but details.] It shouldn't even take that long.
